MARION, VIRGINIA; ALPHA JOHNSTONE SCOTT, 93, of Marion died on March 21.
She was born September 14, 1921, in Wythe County, Virginia. Known for her organizational skills, she attended National Business College and was employed before marriage at Burlington Mills Hosiery, and she later retired from U.S. Forest Service as a Supervisory Business Management Assistant. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Marion, United Methodist Women, and a member of the Royal Oak Chapter of the DAR. After her retirement, she wrote two volumes of her personal life history, Yesteryear, and enjoyed bridge, golf, reading, travel, and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband J. Justin Scott, her parents John William Johnstone and Bessie Topham Johnstone, and all eight of her siblings, Elizabeth Ryan, Dean Stephens, Virginia Moore, Josephine Slemp, John William Johnstone, Jr., George Johnstone, Frances Johnstone and Edith Ann Johnstone.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Teresa and Ricky Edgerton of Shreveport; Louisiana; Susan and J.D. Brooks of Williamsburg, Virginia; and Beth and Jim Gates of Marion; four grandchildren, Carrie Kramer, Emily Prucha, Jeff Brooks and Justin Gates; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The daughters wish to thank their mother's nurturing caregivers for their assistance and devotion. They brought her pleasure during difficult times.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 28, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Woody and Rev. Larry Moore, nephew of the deceased, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
