MARION, Va.: Alvin Eugene “Bubby” Crowder, Sr. of Marion, VA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 10, 2022.
Alvin was born on November 16, 1940 to Otis D. Crowder and Gracie Rowland Crowder in Oxford, PA. When he was 3 months old, the family moved back home to Marion, Va., where Alvin lived and worked for the remainder of his life. Alvin coached a variety of sports, but his first love was baseball. He was a member of the Smyth County Sports Hall of Fame and the Baseball Hall of Fame at Emory & Henry College. After a collegiate career in baseball, he developed a passion for golf and was a member of Holston Hills Country Club since 1964. Alvin was a well-loved educator, administrator, unselfish community servant, and a well-loved Santa in Smyth County and beyond. He was also a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion for 55 years.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Crowder Gwyn.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Linda Carter Crowder; sons, Alvin Eugene Crowder, Jr. and Matthew Scott Crowder and wife, Ashley Bradshaw Crowder; grandchildren, Matthew Blake Crowder, Ella Brooke Crowder and Piper Josephine Whittington; brother, Jonathan D. Crowder and his wife, Carol; brother-in-law, Hugh S. Gwyn; many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2022 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Seaver Brown Chapel. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 15, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Reverend Dr. James Bennington officiating. Graveside services will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 115 South Church St, Marion, VA 24354.
