Betty Sue Foglesong Thompson, age 92, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tennessee.
Sue was born June 29, 1932 in Smyth County, Va., the youngest child of the late Abbie D. Kimberlin and Kent C. Foglesong. She married John J. Thompson, and they moved to the Baltimore area in the mid 1950’s where they lived and raised their children before returning to Marion in 1997. Sue retired from the Meridian Corporation where she worked as Activity Director and Volunteer Co-Ordinator, a job she enjoyed and while there, made many friends. After returning to Marion, Sue served as Chairman for the Smyth County unit of the Salvation Army.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, John J. Thompson; daughter, Linda Susan Gebelein; daughter-in-law, Sarah Jean Thompson; brothers, Paul, Oden “O.K.”, and Woodrow Foglesong; sisters, Pearl Deaton and Audrey Sprinkle and their spouses; nephew, Bill Foglesong; and many friends.
Sue is survived by her son, John Kent Thompson and girlfriend, Barbara SanBoeuf; grandson, Michael Gebelein and wife, Kelly; granddaughter, Rachel Mulock and boyfriend, Alan Ake; son-in-law, Wayne Gebelein and wife, Rose; great-grandsons, Connor and Jacob Gebelein; great-granddaughters, Victoria Scarlett Mulock and Claire Olivia Mulock; step-great-grandchildren, Marleigh and Silas Dishmond; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; special lifelong friends, Janet Atkins, and her Grace United Methodist Church family.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 31, 2024 from 6 until 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church. Funeral services will begin at 7 p.m. with Reverend Barbara Doyle officiating. Burial will be private in Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery, West Bluegrass Trail, Rt. 42, Ceres, Va.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Holston United Methodist Home for Children, P.O. Box 188 Greenville, TN 37744-9982 or the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 133, Marion VA 24354.
