MARION, Va.
Carl D. Morris, Jr. age 84, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Carl was a kind, humble man of service. He enjoyed a good conversation and never met a stranger. Carl was very proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was not only a survivor of the January 1961 fire aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga, he also served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Carl was proud to serve his community, working for the Marion Police Department and eventually retiring from Marion Correctional Center as a security officer. When Carl wasn’t working, he loved to fish and work in his garden. His kind gentle manner will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Morris; parents, Carl D., Sr. and Lillian Morris; and brother, James Morris.
Carl is survived by nieces M.J. Dunavan (Lonnie), Monica Hoel; nephew, Darrell Tibbs; great-niece, Brooke Burns (B.J.); great-nephews, Brent Dunavan (Bobbie), Luke Tibbs and Brian Tibbs; great-great-nieces, Bridyn, Blakly, and Brentley; great-great-nephews, Landon, Mason, and Ridge; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Tibbs; sons, Rodney, Tony, Jody and Danny Morris.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 23, 2022 from 12 until 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor William McCollian officiating. Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery.
