Carolyn Surber Choate

Carolyn Surber Choate age 77, passed away Wednesday, January 08, 2025 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

Carolyn was a true servant with a love for God, family and her community. Married to the love of her life and a true partner, Carol and Jesse made the lives of everyone around them better. From their time with the Sugar Grove Fire Department and Lifesaving Crew, Rye Valley Farmers Club, Rye Valley Ruritan, Rye Valley Committee Counsil, Young at Heart, her love of fellowship, worship and leadership for Elizabeth Methodist Church. 

In addition to her husband of 47 years, Jesse Choate, she is preceded in death by her parents, James and Blanche Surber; sisters, Ruth Sharitz and Nancy Coe; brother, James Surber; nieces, Mary Osborne and Rebecca Wheeling; and nephew, James Coe. 

Carolyn is survived by her nieces and nephews, Sheila (Charlie) Russell, Bo (Karen) Surber, Shirley (Tyke) Widener, Mike (Marie) Sharitz, Kathy (Tony) Jones, Missy Gilliam, Misty (Hunter) Trivette, Katey (Dewey) Jackson; sisters-in-law, Phylis Surber, Barbara Choate and Rosalie Choate; many special great and great-great nieces and nephews and their families; special friends, Gwyn and Sue Combs and a host of many others.

The family will receive friends Monday, February 17, 2025 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Methodist Church, 574 Virginia Highlander Road, Sugar Grove VA 24375. Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mike Dixon officiating. Burial will be private. 

Honorary pallbearers are her special great nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol’s memory to Elizabeth Methodist Church, c/o Debbie Cox, 122 Lead Mine Rd, Sugar Grove, VA 24375 and Sugar Grove 4th Grade Class for the Williamsburg trip, 242 Teas Rd, Sugar Grove, VA 24375.
