Catherine Marie Noe

Marion, Virginia 

Catherine Marie Noe age 61, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn. 

Cathy grew up in Marion, Virginia and was a 1982 graduate of Marion Senior High School. She studied journalism and theater at East Tennessee State University, and she graduated with a degree in Communications. Cathy especially loved theater, and she participated in plays at the ETSU University Theatre. After graduation she spent an apprenticeship as a stagehand at the Barter Youth Stage Company at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia. Cathy also loved photography, and she moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a studio photographer for Woodward & Lothrop. While living in D.C., she met her husband, David Noe, and they married in 1991. Cathy transitioned to a career in security, and she was on duty in Crystal City, Virginia, on 9/11/2001, when the Pentagon was struck a mile away. Cathy and Dave moved to Silver City, New Mexico, while Dave pursued an education in nursing. After a brief time back in Northern Virginia, they moved to Lakeside, Arizona. They were both very active in the local community, and they generously donated time to various Native American charities. Dave Noe passed away in 2022, and Cathy returned to her hometown of Marion, Virginia, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Ingles. Cathy loved family vacations at Brigantine Beach, New Jersey, and she faithfully visited there every year, where she enjoyed surf-fishing, eating at restaurants, and spending time with beloved family friends. Next to her love of Brigantine Beach, Cathy most especially loved reading, and she was an avid collector of books, having read War and Peace several times over, as just one example of her insatiable appetite for reading. Cathy made an impression on everyone who knew her as a person with a warm and generous heart and as a person with an uplifting and positive spirit.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Michael Noe.  

Cathy is survived by her parents, Carl and Helen Schaefer of Marion, Va.; two brothers, Carl Schaefer (Debbie) of Woodbridge, Va. and Michael Schaefer of Huntsville, Ala.; and nephew, Geoffrey Schaefer. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel at a later date.
