MARION, VIRGINIA: CHARLES W. HOLMES, 95, died Saturday, February 11 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Holmes had been a business man in Marion since 1930. He was associated with Marion Wholesale Co. and the Piggly Wiggly stores here and in Saltville, Chilhowie and Galax.
He was a member of Royal Oak Presbyterian Church where he had served as Elder, Deacon and Treasurer at various times. He was a long time member of the Marion Kiwanis. In 1999 he had been a member for 50 years and in 2000 he was made a George E. Hixson fellow of the Kiwanis International.
He was pre-deceased by his wife of seventy years, Dorothy W. Holmes.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara H. Stoudt and her husband, Ralph, of Charlottesville, VA. Two granddaughters, Charlotte L. Stoudt of Los Angeles, CA. and Dorothy S. DeCesare and her husband, Peter, of Ellicott City MD. and three great-grandchildren, Anton, Nina and Dominic DeCesare. His sister Elizabeth Holmes Hull of Marion, his brother-in-law the Rev. Dr. Manson Tate of Dublin, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alan Gray officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of the Church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, c/o Robert White, P.O.
