Coleen Hogston Walls, age 71, died Sunday, October 17, 2021 after a short, but hard-fought battle with an aggressive cancer.
Coleen was a civil servant. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Virginia Tech, and was a registered dietician for more than three decades. She served as a registered dietician at the Southwest Virginia Mental Health Institute for more than 30 years. She was a constant and steady leader for the food service department of the hospital.
More importantly, she was a present and supportive mother to Stephen and Jason – her boys. She could always be seen cheering them on in soccer and basketball games, band and drama performances, academic competitions, and church youth group and choir activities. She raised Stephen and Jason in the First United Methodist Church and was a present and active member of the church.
In her later years, she joined the Grace Circle and these wonderful women became important members of her life. She had a passion for family and quilting, making countless costumes and quilts for her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Dovie Hogston of Saltville, Virginia.
Coleen is survived by her children Stephen Walls and wife, Laney of Charlotte, NC and Jason Walls and wife, Monica of Asheville, NC; five grandchildren Pete, Ethan, Emi, Nicholas, and Marley; older brother, Roger Hogston and wife, Linda of Boiling Springs, NC; nieces and nephews Jeff Hogston, Melissa Pitman, Mike Hogston and Chris Hogston and their families.
