Darrell Wade McKinnon, age 61, left this earth on Saturday, April 30, 2022 with his loving wife by his side, in Roanoke, VA.
Darrell was born on November 21, 1960 in Smyth County, VA. He was the son of the late Walter Scott McKinnon and Virginia Waive Sexton McKinnon.
Darrell lived life to its fullest and was the life of the party. Growing up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, Darrell was avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He often reminisced about a hunting trip to Alaska. Darrell was a biker, loved his Harley Davidson, Tilley, and enjoyed riding with his cousin turned brother, Tommy. In 2001, Darrell married the love of his life, Robin, and moved to the place he called home, the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Darrell lived in Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills and worked for many years as the warehouse manager for Noland Company. He was a history and military buff and often tortured his wife and daughters forcing them to watch documentaries on the History Channel. Darrell enjoyed the ocean and beach. He never met a type of rum he didn’t love and could mix a mean drink. He was a lover of music, especially classic rock. He made sure his daughters grew up knowing “good music” and didn’t miss an opportunity to serenade them with a rendition of 99 Luftballoons. Darrell never passed up an opportunity for a good tattoo. His tattoos were truly works of art representing who he was. Darrell loved his family. He was a son, husband and friend, but his most treasured titles were Daddums and Pop Pop. Darrell’s stories, jokes and laughter will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his father and mother, Darrell was preceded in death by his father-in-law, William (Bill) H. Sawyers; sister-in-law Vicky Baldwin; and furry companions Lloyd, Max, and Molly.
He is survived by the love of his life, Robin McKinnon of Marion, VA; daughters, Shenna Creech (husband Drew) of Archdale, NC., and Dakota Russell of Charlotte, NC.; his grandchildren Liza and Dax Creech of Archdale, NC.; his cousin and best friend, Tom McKinnon (wife Julie) of Monrovia, MD.; his mother-in-law, Joan Sawyers; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sherrie and Sammy Frye all of Marion, VA.; and his pups, Rainie and Rocky.
A celebration of life will be held in Darrell’s honor and memory at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN. 38105, www.stjude.org, 1-800-822-6344.
