MARION, Va.
Diana “D.D.” Burke Brant, age 78, passed away at her home in Marion, Va. Monday, May 16, 2022.
She was born January 22, 1944 in Richmond, Va. to the late Hampden Aulick Burke and Niña Bitler Burke. “D.D.” was a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving as President of Episcopal Church Women and she served on the Vestry. She was active in A Leg Up Therapeutic Riding Program in Abingdon, serving as Chairman of the Board and as a volunteer. “D.D.” was involved in Remote Area Medical of Smyth County and on the Board of Directors for Grace House on the Mountain in St. Paul, Va. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, and coached basketball for many years for the Marion Recreation Department. She was an avid tennis player and horsewoman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, James Herman Brant; and nephew Aulick Burke Rucker.
“D.D.” is survived by her husband of 56 years, Henry Hester Brant of Marion, Va.; daughters, Katherine Brant Manning and husband, William David Manning, Sr. of Lynchburg, Va. and Elizabeth Brant Songer of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, William David Manning, Jr. and wife, Alice of Shelby, N.C., Simeon Brant Manning and wife, Cassie of Burlington, N.C., Katherine Grace Manning of Lynchburg, Va., Aulick Ford Songer and John Henry Songer, both of Boise, Idaho; sister, Pamela Burke Rucker and husband, Dale of Roanoke, Va.; niece, Elizabeth Evans Rucker of Richmond, Va.; sister-in-law, Caroline Walker Brant; niece, Rosemary Brant Hancock and husband, David of Wytheville, Va.
A Celebration of “D.D.’s” life will be held Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 2 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church, 409 West Main Street, Marion, VA 24354 with Reverend Emily Edmondson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in “D.D.’s” memory to Christ Episcopal Church, c/o Treasurer, PO Box 189, Marion, VA 24354.
