MARION, VIRGINIA: DONALD E. "DONNIE" SMITH, age 61, died Monday, April 28, 2014 at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Virginia. Donnie was born January 6, 1953 in Smyth County, Virginia to the late Hugh Cleveland and Mary Ruth Atwell Smith. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR and his favorite teams the Washington Redskins and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Donnie took his enthusiasm for sports and turned it into a way to volunteer in the community as a coach for the Recreation Department. His enthusiasm was always an encouragement to the children participating. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Smith and Hugh Smith, Jr. Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Hope Smith of Marion, Virginia; two daughters, Angela Smith Stacy and Tabitha Ruth Smith, both of Marion, Virginia; three sons, Christopher Michael Smith and wife, Kayla of Marion, Virginia, Charles Cornett and wife, Cindy of Atkins, Virginia and Chris Cornett of Marion, Virginia; one sister, Nina Haga and husband Robert of Maryland; one brother Jimmy Smith and wife, Flora of Roanoke, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Santino Smith, Kaylah Harrington, Amber Ruth Harrington, Alexus Smith, Shaylee Cornett, Ava Smith, Sapphire "Sassy" Cornett, Christopher Hugh "Hughie" Smith and Julie Cornett; one great-grandchild, Amberlynn Lungaro; special brothers-in-law, Mark Smith of Marion, Virginia and David Smith of West Virginia; several nieces, nephews and many special cousins including, Mary Watson; and many special friends including Marvin Thompson, Julian "Julio" Willard, Edward "Whiney" Hamm and all his co-workers at General Shale. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Reverend Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Groseclose, Virginia. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com.
