Elaine Tibbs Morris

MARION, Va.

Elaine Tibbs Morris, age 80, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at Ballad Health Hospice House, Bristol, Tenn.

Elaine held many roles in the Marion community. She may have taken your money for a movie ticket at the old Lincoln Theatre on Main Street. She may have sold you a Coke when she was running the old canteen snack bar at Southwestern State Hospital. Or you may have seen her proudly wearing her uniform while she served as a guard at Marion Correctional Center. Family members knew her as the one who remembered all the stories, all the birthdays, and all the recipes. Because she married a little later than traditional age, nieces and nephews all tell tales of going with her on dates and being treated to ice cream at the Dairyland Drive-In or Dip Dog in Marion. She was a favorite babysitter. She married Carl Morris in 1976 and while the duo never had children of their own, they served as bonus parents to all the kids in the family. She will be missed for many reasons…not the least of which is the way she made everyone feel welcome, for shelves filled with home-canned green beans and pickled beets, and for her famous stuffing patties.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Foy and Ruth Tibbs; sister, Lona Hoel; brothers, James Tibbs and Joe Tibbs; infant brother; great-nephew, Blake Dunavan, who she loved like a son; and niece, Pattie Stanley. 

Elaine is survived by her husband of 46 years, Carl Morris; brother Bill Tibbs and wife, Mary; nieces and nephews, Darrell Tibbs, MJ Tibbs Dunavan, Chris Tibbs, Monica Hoel, Kim Tibbs-Sturgill, Eddie Tibbs and Linda Jo Stanley; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 25, 2022 from 1 until 3 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. with the Reverend Bill McCollian officiating. Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery, Marion, Va.
