CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA: ELSIE KIRBY QUERY SCLATER, age 92, formerly of Marion, VA, died Friday, May 27, 2005 at the Cypress of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Sclater graduated from Central High School in Knoxville, TN, and attended Carson Newman College and the University of Tennessee. In 1931, Mrs. Sclater played the first violins of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra under the founder and conductor, Bertha Malburn Clark. Mrs. Sclater was an avid duplicate bridge player; enjoyed the beauty of flowers; and watching televised college sports. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sclater was preceded in death by her first husband, D. D. "Spud" Query, second husband, William S. Sclater; three sisters, Grace Kirby Jones, Lucy Kirby Hembree, and Aniece Kirby Hodges. Mrs. Sclater is survived by two children, Fredrick D. Query and wife, Lynda of Charlotte, NC and Joan Query Rash and husband Robert of Charlotte, NC. Five grandchildren, Nancy Rash Maloney and husband, John, Brian Query Rash and wife, Amy, Anna Query Smythe and husband, Kyle, Adam Query and wife, Margaret, and Aaron Query. Three great-grandchildren, Connell Wesley Maloney, Caroline Elizabeth Smythe, and Gilbert Granville Rash. She is also survived by many special nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alan Gray officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private.
