GLADYS SURBER BALES, age 80, died Thursday, February 5th, 2004 in the Wellington Place in Johnson City, Tennessee. Born in Saltville, Virginia on May 10th , 1923, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Talbert Surber and was a long time member of the Bear Creek Atonement Lutheran Church in Atkins where she taught Sunday School for a number years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Walter Robert Bales on May 10th, 2003. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ervin Farmer of Danville, Kentucky. Four sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Judy Bales of Marion, Virginia; Ed and Susan Bales of Knoxville, Tennessee; Dan and Nancy Bales of Woodstock, Georgia; and Joe and Teresa Bales of Piney Flats, Tennessee. Ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Four sisters, Lemmie S. Hagy Debusk, Margaret S. Cisco, and Emily S. Hagy, all of Saltville, VA, and Mary S. Yarvis of Portage, IN. One brother, Oliver Surber of Falmouth, Maine. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 7th at 11:30 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Ed Schaack officiating. Burial will follow in the Wassum Cemetery, Atkins, Virginia. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10:30 til 11:15 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
