GORDON WOODS LINKOUS, age 88, died Saturday, September 20, 2008 in Cambridge House Nursing Home, Bristol, Tennessee. He was born July 13, 1920 to the late Harry A. and Nell W. Linkous. He was a 1938 graduate of Marion High School and attended Oklahoma State Teachers College. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served until 1945. He was stationed in England during D-Day and flew during the African Campaign on a B17. Mr. Linkous returned to Marion following the war, where he began an office supply business. He was manager of the Home Furniture Store for many years, worked for McKesson and then for the Hoover Company until retirement. Football was his great love; he played for Marion High School where he was All-State during his senior year. He also played for Oklahoma State Teachers College. He rarely missed an Emory & Henry or Virginia Tech football game. He also played in the Semi-Pro Baseball League, Roanoke, Virginia. He was an avid supporter for Marion High School Athletics and Little League System. Being a passionate golf enthusiast, he never missed an opportunity to play golf. He was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, Marion, Virginia, where he served as usher for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Nile A. Linkous; one brother, Harry A. Linkous, Jr. and one sister, Northea Linkous. He is survived by three sons, Gordon W. (Woody) Linkous, Jr. and wife, Carolyn of Crossville, Tennessee, Johnny Linkous and wife, Kim of Montery, Tennessee and Alan Linkous and wife, Debbie of Bristol, Tennessee; four grandsons, Eric Linkous, Lee Linkous, Jason Linkous and Derek Linkous; two great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Marion, Virginia with Rev. Jonathan Jonas officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Mausoleum. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com.
