MARION, VIRGINIA: HARRIETT FLEMING DICKSON, age 74, died Monday, September 17, 2012 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Virginia.
She was born June 16, 1938 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Dr. John M. and Caroline Miller Fleming. Harriett graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1956 and attended Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Mississippi, earning an Associates Degree in Home Economics. She attended the University of Georgia; and in 1961 graduated from Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She was a member of Royal Oak Presbyterian Church and the Women of the Church where she was very active in Food and Fellowship. She was Brownie Leader for Troop #356 for 13 years; and for many years was a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Harriett was an avid Clemson University Tiger fan giving her the name "Granny Tiger" by which she was affectionately known.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James H. Fleming and John M. Fleming, Jr.
Harriett is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles B. Dickson of Marion, Virginia; two daughters, Caroline Dickson Angstadt and husband, Kevin of Rural Retreat, Virginia and Elizabeth F. Dickson of Marion, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Cassandra Kaye Angstadt and Christina Kaye Angstadt; one sister-in-law, Josie B. Fleming; one aunt, Launa Fleming; six nieces and nephews, James H. Fleming, Jr., Frank M. Fleming, Sarah F. Todd, Jessica F. Crawford, John Henry Fleming and Giles Fleming; six cousins, Cathy F. Jordan, Dottie Rene F. Green, Sandra Fleming, Courtney Fleming, Sylvia Rathbun and Tommy Fleming.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 21, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with Reverend Alan Gray, Reverend Steve Cathcart and Reverend Tom Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
