MARION, VIRGINIA; HELEN KILBY BYRD, age 82, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at her home in Marion, Virginia.
Helen was the youngest of eight children, born to George and Ollie Shepherd in Whitetop, Virginia. She left Konnarock Training School and married at age fifteen, but completed her high school education in her thirties after being widowed. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Mark W. Kilby; and her second husband, James B. Byrd, Jr.
Helen is survived by one son, Fred Kilby and wife, Mati of Nashville, Tennessee; two daughters, Carole Greer and husband, Jack of Marion, Virginia and Elizabeth Hoffman and husband, Neil of Atkins, Virginia; one brother, Wade Shepherd of Atkins, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Geneva Shepherd of Marion, Virginia; one brother-in-law, Ken Kilby of Whitetop, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Josh, Rob, Sara, Mark, Eric, David, Tara, Ralph, Jr. and Michelle; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins including very special nephew, Charles Shepherd and very special cousins, Macy Culbertson and Phyllis Stamper.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Falling Water Baptist Church with Reverend Jerry Creasy officiating. Burial will follow in Weaver Cemetery, Whitetop, Virginia. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
