Mr. Hiram H. Skaggs Jr, 86, of Urbana, MD, was peacefully called home Friday, February 7, 2025. He was most recently being cared for in Marion, VA by his daughter, Lisa and son in law Michael.
He was a devoted servant of our Lord Jesus Christ and was a longtime member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Urbana. Born on December 15, 1938 in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of the late Hubert Hiram Skaggs and Anna Laura Lawrence Skaggs. He was a graduate of Princeton High School, Princeton, WV, Bluefield College, Bluefield, WV, and George Washington University, Washington DC. Hiram served his country in the US Army from 1959 to 1962. Most of his time was spent surveying on the Mariana Islands in the South Pacific. He retired in 1995 from the Defense Mapping Agency after 33 years. He traveled extensively for the Government to Canada, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, and Denmark and served as a Geodesist and Computer Systems Analyst. Hiram enjoyed camping, traveling, trail walking, woodworking, playing the Banjo, golfing, fishing, and was a good story teller. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family.
Hiram was preceded in death by his father Hubert, mother Anna, brother Rhea (wife Marie), son Steven and two beloved wives Linda and Mary (Tillie).
He is survived by his children, Laura Kidd (husband Doug Kidd), Lisa Mercer (husband Michael Mercer), grandchildren Kristen Welch (husband Joseph Welch), Jordan Mercer (partner DJ Yorke), and Luke Mercer. He is also survived by his great grandchildren George Welch and Charlotte Welch. He will be remembered by his niece, nephews, and many friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 1 until 2 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick, MD. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Rod Fry officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
