Marion, Va.
Hugh F. Murphy, Sr. age 95 passed away Monday, June 10, 2024 at Francis Marion Manor, Marion, Va.
Hugh had his priorities straight – God, family and country. Hugh and his family moved from New Jersey to Marion in the summer 1962 to begin his work in the computer industry with Harwood. Hugh began his computer work while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Family consumed his non-working hours – playing cards and losing about $20 just about every time. His grandchildren brightened his time by playing in the pool or just being together. The Catholic Church was paramount to Hugh and his family – he was very involved and active in his church. One of Hugh’s loves was the Lincoln Theatre. He was a hard working volunteer who brought the Lincoln back to life. Hugh will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie T. Murphy; daughter, Barbara Murphy; great-grandson, Mason David; parents, William T and Margaret Murphy; two brothers; and four sisters.
Hugh is survived by two daughters, Donna Untiedt (Tracy), and Patty Hendren (Phil), all of Marion, Va.; five sons, Billy Murphy (Terry) of Dublin, Va., Joey Murphy (Lisa) of Marion, Va., Jack Murphy (Cindy) of Christiansburg, Va., Robert Murphy (Janet) of Salem, Va., and Hugh F. Murphy, Jr. of Marion, Va.; sister, Bernedette Sundell of New Jersey; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Special thank you to the staff of Francis Marion Manor and Hospice of Southwest Virginia for the love and care shown to Hugh.
