MARION, VIRGINIA: JAMES W. "JOE" SAYERS, age 96, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Virginia.
Joe was born January 6, 1918 in Smyth County, Virginia to the late John G. and Sarah Etta Davis Sayers. He was a lifelong resident of the Attoway community in Marion. He was so proud of his family, his church and his work. Joe was a member of Falling Water Baptist Church for 80 years and a church deacon for 48 of those years. He was a supervisor with General Shale for 35 years. Joe was crazy about his family. He and his wife, Twyleene were married for 69 years. "Papaw" or "Papaw Joe" as he was referred to by his grandchildren, was always smiling and always friendly. Joe will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife Twyleene Sturgill Sayers of Marion, Virginia; one daughter, Mary Etta Barker and husband, Dwight of Chilhowie, Virginia; two brothers, Larry Sayers and wife, Marcy and Lynn Sayers and wife, Betsy; one sister-in-law, Glenna Evans all of Marion, Virginia; two grandchildren, Colonel Chris Barker and wife, Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Barker of Lorton, Virginia and Scott Barker and wife, Lieutenant Colonel Marti Barker of Bellbrook, Ohio; one great-grandson, Aiden Barker; two great-granddaughters, Neve and Cali Barker; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Falling Water Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Creasy officiating. Burial in Attoway Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Falling Water Baptist Church.
