JAMES EDWARD “JAY BIRD” SCHWARTZ, SR., age 96, passed away peacefully, Thursday, November 24, 2022 at Pulaski Health and Rehab in Pulaski, Va.

Jay Bird was a true people person. He loved his family, especially the ones who called him papaw. Mr. Schwartz was a proud Army World War II veteran who loved his country and had the hat to prove it! He worked as an electrician for Marley Moulding until he retired and became his wife’s right-hand man. Jay was well known for his football and basketball skills at Marion Senior High and loved supporting the Hurricanes. When he wasn’t working with Hilda, those two loved to dance with friends at the Chilhowie Lions Club on Friday nights. He loved to sit on the porch and watch the birds, work on word searches, read his Bible and say his prayers. Jay lived a long and good life and it gives his family comfort to know he is together with the Lord and the love of his life today.

Mr. Schwartz is survived by his daughters, Cindy and John Olinger of Pulaski, VA, and Dana and Mike Miller of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tina and Bruce Fulton (Drew and Brett), Kristina and Jaime De La Rosa (Oscar and Lucie), Jennifer and Christian Cardoza, Nat and Angela Olinger (Zachary and Zoe), and James and Angel Miller (Lola June and Remy); and many nieces, nephews and friends everywhere.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Farmer Schwartz; parents, Gilbert Jackson and Mary Josephine Schwartz; son, James Edward (Jimmy) Schwartz, Jr.;   two sisters and four brothers.

The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their prayers and to all the nurses and doctors of Pulaski Lewis Gale Hospital, Pulaski Health and Rehab, Medi Home Health and Hospice, and Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Fla.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the Seaver-Brown Funeral Home chapel with Mr. Denton Staley officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 10a.m. in Rose Lawn Cemetery’s Mausoleum with Military Rites presented by the US Army Honor Guard and VFW Post #4667, Marion.
