John Preston Buchanan, Jr., 89, of Kuttawa, Kentucky died Monday, February 9th, 2004.
Born in Marion on November 1, 1914, he was the son of the late John Preston Buchanan and Annabel Morris Buchanan. He was a graduate of Marion High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II and was discharged honorably following the conflict. There after , he attended and graduated from the University of Chicago and later worked for Philco for many years in Greenland on the early warning system for the detection of intercontinental ballistic missiles. After leaving Philco, he worked for the Louisville YMCA for almost twenty years retiring in 1985. during his lifetime, Mr. Buchanan gave to many charitable endeavors, one of which he was most proud of was his gift to help establish the Monument Honoring American Revolutionary soldiers from Smyth County presently located on the Courthouse Square in Marion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Buchanan Crounse.
Surviving are one sister, Annabel Stainback Brown of Kuttawa, Ky. One brother, Patrick Campbell Buchanan of Williamsburg, Va. Numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 24th at 12:00 p.m. in the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church in Marion with the Rev. Alan Gray officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall of church.
