Mary Ruth “Tootsie” Smith Coe, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
Ruth was born in Washington County, VA and grew up in Smyth County, VA. She graduated from Marion Senior High School and began working at Greer Studio. She married Franklin E. Coe and moved to Roanoke, VA and began her career in education at Mountain View Elementary. She returned to Washington County, Virginia following the death of her husband of 54 years. She cherished her life near her daughter, Lynn and sister, Evelyn. Ruth adored her beloved dog Charlie and her beautiful times with her special friend, Warren Hastings. A special thank you to the fantastic staff at Bristol Rehab Center & Memory Care for the love and care that they gave.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin E. Coe; father, Garland “Tony” Smith; mother, Ella Mae Kell Smith; brother-in-law, Bob Taylor; sister, Janie Smith Thomas; brother, Kenneth E. Smith; niece, Amy Roesner; and nephew, Mike Snow.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Lynn Ellen Coe Compton and partner, Edward Harsen of Abingdon, VA; sister, Evelyn Smith Taylor of Marion, VA; brother, James E “Jim” Smith and wife Pat of Greensboro, NC; nieces, Julie Fiorino, Debbie Thomas, Sophie Stout, Dorothy Smith Jacobs and Kathy Wright; nephews, Matthew Smith, Joe Thomas and Charlie Smith; sisters-in-law, Margaret Smith and Eleanor Snow; brother-in-law, Richard Snow; and her special friend, Warren Hastings and their beloved dog, Charlie
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 12 p.m. with Pastor David Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn cemetery.
