Marion, Va.
Miles Everett Untiedt passed away peacefully Friday, March 28, 2025, at the age of 90.
Miles was born March 12, 1935, in Lake Park, Iowa, the son of Julius A. and Myrtle E. Untiedt. He attended the University of Iowa and worked for Boeing in Wichita, Kansas before moving to Muskegon, Michigan to join Brunswick. He transferred to the company’s Marion, Virginia offices in 1968 and retired from Brunswick in 1993 to open Smyth County Rental, which may or may not have just been an excuse to hang out with his sons and buddies in his golden years.
Miles Untiedt could build, fix, and engineer anything. (Except the internet. He never quite mastered that one, though it fascinated him to no end.) He was a creative genius who held multiple patents. Miles invented the automatic bowling ball return and the lightweight billiard table, and he reversed a vacuum engine to create the game of air hockey. He always had a project or two going, and any visitor to his shop or home risked being commandeered into apprenticeship.
He had a sly sense of humor; and if you were patient enough to wait for the punch line, he might regale you with an unbelievable – but absolutely true – story about his life.
Miles wasn’t ever the loudest person in the room, but he might have been the kindest. He was a longtime member of the Marion Masonic Lodge and the Marion Lions Club, and he quietly volunteered his time to help others in need. Before his passing, Miles celebrated 35 years of sobriety with the joyful support of his family and his friends at Alcoholics Anonymous, where he served as leader, mentor and Sponsor. He believed in the goodness of humanity, and he was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church community.
A firm adherent to routine, Miles was a twice weekly fixture at the Lifetime Wellness Center, spent every Monday and Thursday evening in communion with his A.A. family, and could be spotted at Food City each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. sharp. On Sunday’s Miles and his wife, Jane Dieterich Untiedt picked up a Wendy’s Frosty and drove out to Hungry Mother State Park – a tradition he carried on by himself after her passing.
Miles adored his wife and dedicated himself to caring for her in her later years. He treasured his sons, and he surrounded himself at home with pictures of his extended family. He loved shrimp, diet Mt. Dew and a good pair of suspenders, Nat Geo and Dr. Pol, and the sound of air rifle pelting a scourge-of-the-earth groundhog.
Miles Untiedt liked to say he was adequate, but if you were lucky enough to be in his life, you know how truly special he was.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jules and Porter; his beloved wife Jane; and son Thomas and daughter-in-law, Joyce.
Miles is survived by his sister, Sybil Voss; brother Nolan and wife, Mary; sons, Michael and wife, Mary, and Tracy and wife, Donna; 10 grandchildren Jason, Whitney, Kristin, Ashley, Jerod, Jacob, Adrienne, Dustin, Micah and Elisha; 4 great-grandchildren Gavin, Damien, Avery and Olivia; and a large extended family.
