Patricia J. Hawkins Geib

MARION, Va.

Patricia J. Hawkins Geib, age 89, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at her home.

Pat was born June 27, 1932 in Elgin, Iowa during the great depression. Her family moved to West Union, Iowa and she graduated from West Union School in 1949. She met her husband-to-be, John, at a community dance in Oelwein, Iowa. When John was drafted into the Army for the Korean conflict, they were married at Fort Riley in Manhattan, Kansas in May, 1951. During John's deployment, Pat worked at Dessel Furniture store in West Union, Iowa. When John returned to the states in 1952, he and Pat traveled for work around the Midwest, giving birth to their first daughter, Sherry, in La Porte, Indiana and their second daughter, Pamela, in Wichita, Kansas. A short time later they moved to Marion, VA. Pat was a stay-at-home mom until the late sixties, when she worked at various clothing manufacturers around southwest Virginia. She also cared for her parents in her home from 1970 through 1980. Her final job was with Buster Brown. Pat volunteered with the Pink Ladies at Smyth County Community Hospital for several years in the 80s. She was also an avid gardener, bird watcher and animal lover. She especially loved seeing the hummingbirds outside the front window and recorded the first sighting of robins every spring. Pat loved her flowers and tried to plant new ones every year until late in life. She had a green thumb with her indoor plants and kept Christmas cactus and African violets thriving. Pat loved her cats and dogs and there were always at least one of each in the home. Pat will be dearly missed by her family, friends, cats and dog.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Cathleen Hawkins; sister Beverly Wolfe; and beloved husband, John A. Geib.

Pat is survived by her daughters, Sherry Geib Lowry (Stephen) of Knoxville Tenn., and Pamela R. Geib (Gerry Mangold) of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren, Jonathan Lowry, Joshua Lowry (Maegan), Derek Lowry (Anna), Amanda Wright (Taylor), Beverly Ostrander (Michael) and Lara Pugh (Jay Wanner); and twelve great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 30, 2022 from 1p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 115 South Church Street, Marion, VA 24354. Funeral services will begin at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor James Bennington officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Mausoleum, 4410 Lee Highway, Marion, VA 24354.
