Raymond J. Sheets age 75, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

If you lived in Sugar Grove, you knew that familiar face, sitting on the porch. The lovingly nicknamed “Mayor” of Sugar Grove, Raymond loved his community of Sugar Grove and gave to it in many ways including through 25 years of service with the Sugar Grove Fire Department & Life Saving Crew. He met the love of his life Ann in 1965, and they were married on Valentine’s Day of 1969. Raymond began a 34 year career with the State Department that same year, retiring at the age of 55. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed gun trading, fishing, hunting, golf and bluegrass gospel music. But the light of Raymond’s life was his eight grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Hazel Sheets; several brothers and sisters; great-grandson, Easton Sunday.

Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ann Sheets; daughters, Angie Sheets (PJ Jones) and Missy Sheets; sons, Steve Sheets (Ginger) and Fred Sheets (Lisha Grubb), all of Sugar Grove, Va.; sisters, Becky Bise of Richmond, Va. and Connie Hemphill of Rural Retreat, Va,; eight grandchildren, Ruthie Sheets, Lakyn Sunday, Austin Sheets, Erin Bowman, Sadie Sheets, Timmy Sheets, Carson Sheets and Anna Marie Sheets; five great-grandchildren, Reagan Sunday, Adalee Sheets, Ella Bowman, Blakely Sunday and Tripp Norris; several nieces, nephews and their families; special friends Jimmy and Bonnie Grubb, and Charles Howell.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 13, 2024 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel, 237 East Main Street, Marion, VA 24354. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor David Medley officiating. Burial will follow at Slemp Cemetery, 234 Horne Hollow Road, Sugar Grove, VA 24375.
