MARION, VIRGINIA: ROBERT JOHN "BOB" BARKER, age 86, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at Francis Marion Manor in Marion, Virginia. Bob was a Christian whose faith was in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, having served in the Philippines, New Britain, New Guinea and Korea during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 and was retired from Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas H. and Jincy Comer Barker; and brothers, Clarence, Ray, Garnett, Herbert and Bill Barker. Bob is survived by his wife, Blanche Emerson Barker of Marion, Virginia; sons, Ernest J. Barker and wife, Marie of Gate City, Virginia, Larry C. Barker and wife, Chris of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, James R. Barker and wife, Carol of Marion, Virginia; grandchildren, Allison B. von Berg and husband, Scott of North Beach, Maryland, John C. Barker and wife, Angela of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Stacie N. Barker of Johannesburg, South Africa, J. David Barker of Budapest, Hungary, Christina M. Barker of Radford, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Briley G. Barker and Baylor A. Barker, both of Hendersonville, Tennessee; sisters, Mary B. James of Grant, Virginia, Alma B. Joines and husband, Gene of Sparta, North Carolina, Bobbie B. Taylor of Oak Hall, Virginia, Arvinia B. Hart of Thomasville, North Carolina, Betty B. Tibbs and husband, Larry of Rural Retreat, Virginia, Lettie Mae B. Dean and husband, Herbie of Thomasville, North Carolina; and brother Dexter Barker of Bland, Virginia. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Reverend Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Grant Cemetery in Grant, Virginia with Military Rites conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to The American Red Cross, Smyth County Chapter, 14298 Lee Highway, Bristol, VA 24202.
