ROANOKE, VIRGINIA: ROBERT VAN CARNAHAN, age 83 of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Denver, Colorado, Bob was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge there and part of the Scottish Rite Consistory. An avid musician and accomplished trombonist, Bob enjoyed many performing experiences, including playing while serving in the Colorado National Guard and the U.S. Air Force; and he mentored and encouraged young musicians all his life. He was a member of the Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke.
Bob is survived by his wife Sallie Scott Carnahan of Roanoke, Virginia; great-nephew Scott Van Deventer of Charleston, South Carolina; and Sallie's brothers Jake Scott and wife Madeline of Marion, Virginia; Ben Scott and wife Margaret of Gate City, Virginia; Charlie Scott and wife Joyce of San Mateo, Florida; and sisters-in-law, Betty Scott of Radford, Virginia and Helen Scott of Kingsport, Tennessee.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Roanoke United Methodist Home, with Reverend Roy Miller and Reverend Arthur Grant officiating. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Marion, Virginia.
