Roy Edward Evans age 85, of Rural Retreat, passed away Thursday February 6, 2025 at the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.
He was born in Freeman, WVA on April 3, 1939 to the late Roy Edward, Sr. and Oney Elizabeth Miles Evans. Roy was a graduate of Concord College where he was a member of the Concord Commanders where he played music professionally. Roy also obtained his Masters Degree from Radford University. Roy served as a clinician and adjudicator for numerous Band Events, including the All County and All District Bands. Roy served as Band Director at Marion Senior High School for 30 years. During this time the Marion Senior High School Band under his Direction served as ambassadors of music for the United States of America with performances in Mexico and Bahamas as well as performances at several Worlds Fairs. Roy was also a Member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by six siblings, Wanda Evans, baby brother, Bonnie Roark, Ralph “Shorty” Evans, Carol Blackburn and Roger Evans; and a great-great grandson, Maverick Robert.
Roy is survived by his wife 63 years, Sara S. Evans; son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Patricia E. Evans; grandson and wife, Michael W. “Lo-Gear” and Kelsey Robert all of Rural Retreat; brother, Roland Bruce Evans of Mansfield, OH; sister, Alice Nelson of Bramwell, WVA; sister-in-law, Patricia “Patty Rae” Evans of Stafford, VA; brother and sister-in-law, Donald P. and Sandra L. Lacy of Chantilly, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends Monday, February 10, 2025 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home, 215 South 6th Street, Wytheville, Va. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor David Payne officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, 7764 West Lee Highway, Rural Retreat, VA.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department or the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church.
