Roy G. Layne age 76, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.
Roy was a wonderful husband, dad, grand-da, and friend. He loved life and enjoyed living. He attended Kirkman Technical High School in Chattanooga, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was a jet engine mechanic during the Vietnam War. Roy returned to Tennessee and met the love of his life, Frances, at Cleveland State Community College. He then received his MBA from the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga, and began a rewarding career in Health Care Administration; from Cleveland, Tenn. to Galax, Va. to the Eastern Shore, and retiring as Assistant Director of Southwest Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion, Va. When Roy wasn’t working, he loved UT sports and was a Vol through and through. He loved tennis, softball, and soccer. He coached his kids and their friends. Roy enjoyed his community and was a proud Rotarian. He was a long time member of Chilhowie Christian Church and was always active in his faith. Today, his family is comforted in knowing he’s well and living more than ever in Heaven. Roy will be missed by all who know and love him.
He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Hazel and Roy L. Bivens; siblings, Kenneth Layne, Polly Maxwell, and Darlene Rives.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Frances M. Layne of Chilhowie, Va.; daughter, Kerry Adam and husband, Michael of Springfield, Va.; sons, Kevin Layne and wife, Emily of Seymour, Tenn. and Keith Layne and wife, Tina of Clover, S.C.; sister, Wanda Bradshaw of Angleton, Tx.; brother, Clyde Layne and wife, Betty of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 8 grandchildren, Gideon Adam, Tobias Adam, Chloe Layne, Violet Layne, Bozi Layne, Jeremiah Layne, Aiden “AJ” Layne, and Isobel Layne; several nieces, nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Chilhowie Christian Church, 172 Apple Valley Road, Chilhowie, VA 24319, with Ministers Frank Branson and Justin May officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Funeral Honors Guard and Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.
