Roy Russell McNeil

Roy Russell McNeil age 90, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

Roy was born on September 27, 1932 to the late Oscar and Maude McNeil in Ashe County, North Carolina. He graduated from Marion High school in 1951, and entered active service in the Navy in 1952. After proudly serving his country until 1960, he continued to serve as a life member and post commander of VFW Post 4667 for many years; as well as a life member of Smyth County American Legion Post #18. Roy served his community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, Mount Rogers Community Service Board and the Smyth County Electoral Board, just to name a few. However, one of his greatest achievements was carrying on his father’s legacy and running his own business, McNeil Furniture, for nearly 80 years. Roy was a friend to many and a stranger to none.
 
Roy is survived by his wife, Helen Comer McNeil; two sons, Roger McNeil and wife, Amy, and James McNeil and wife, Teresa all of Marion, Va.; step-children Kathy Rutherford of Sugar Grove, Va., Kathy Chapman and husband, Larry of Wytheville, Va., Jeanie Somerday and husband, Shawn of Fort Mill, S.C., Judy Ridge and husband, Ryan of Atkins, Va.; three grandchildren, Sarah McNeil, Kathryn McNeil, Zachary McNeil; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 23, 2023  from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor John Graham and Pastor Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Guard and Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.
