Roy Charles Russell, age 75, passed away very peacefully on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born March 20, 1942 in Smyth County Va. to the late Curtis Webster Russell and Lockie Belle Callahan Russell.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Roy honorably served his country in the United States Navy, and Army during the Vietnam War. Prior to retirement from the military, he had received the Bronze Star, among other awards and medals, for his heroic service and achievement during combat. Roy was known for his love of fishing and eating doughnuts, but above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He had never met a stranger!
Roy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn Russell; son, Greg (Millie); daughters, Angie, Sandy, and Cindy; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Nancy), John (Janet), Buster (Sherri), Joe (Martha), Ray, Buzzy, and Sam; and sister, Sadie (Ronnie).
Per the family’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held later at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Va., where military rights will be conducted.
