Ruth A. Dishner Dunavant

Marion, Va.

Ruth A. Dishner Dunavant age 83, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2024 with her loving family by her side.

Ruth was the heart of her home, being a proud wife of 65 years, mother, sister and most importantly, granny to the grandkids. She grew up at Hungry Mother State Park on her grandfather’s land where she later married the love of her life in the chapel surrounded by the lumber her grandfather donated to have it built. Ruth loved her job at Smyth County Community Hospital and shared that love by frequently baking homemade cakes and bread for the doctors, nurses and staff. She enjoyed collecting rocks, camping with her husband in Troutdale, long walks outdoors and “seeing where they would end up” on long car rides. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Herman Dishner Sr. and Ruth Hall Dishner; brother, William Herman Dishner Jr. 

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bill Dunavant of Troutdale/Marion; three children, Martha Dunavant Harris and husband, Dale of Atkins, Va., Dorothy Dunavant Farris and husband, Mark of Atkins, Va., Jim Dunavant and wife, Christy of Marion, Va.; sister, Tessie Dishner Hayes of Marion, Va.; brother, Pat Dishner and wife, Jan of Woodbridge, Va; grandchildren, Summer Kohari, Megan Patrick, Jonathan Harris, Ethan Harris, Austin Dunavant and Caitlin Dunavant; four great – grandchildren; special nephews, Lonnie Dunavant and Bradley Burke, as well as several other nieces and nephews; and special sister- in- law, Yvonne Burke.

In honoring Ruth’s final wishes, there will be no public services.
