Sylvia Scott West

SUGAR GROVE, Va.

Sylvia Scott West age 84, passed away peacefully, looking at the mountains she loved, in her home surrounded by family Sunday, September 11, 2022.

Sylvia was born and raised in Teas, Va. She graduated from Sugar Grove School, attended Radford College. She and Bob moved to Elkton, Md. in 1957 where they raised their children. She worked for the Cecil County Public School System for 25 years. After retirement, she and Bob moved back to Teas to renovate her childhood homeplace which she named Still Meadow Farm in 1997. Prior to her illness, Sylvia was very involved in her community. She was a devoted life-long member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of Ruritan, and Young at Heart Club. The joys in her life were the ones who called her Nana. Her favorite hobbies were crafting, birdwatching and her beautiful herb and flower gardens. Sylvia will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Earl Scott and Pauline Scott Kirk; son, Kevin Todd West; sister, Gloria Munsey and husband, Ralph; brother, Charles “Pete” Scott; son-in-law, Phillip Bailey.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bob E. West of Sugar Grove, Va.; daughters, Melissa West Bailey of Elkton Md. and Sugar Grove, Va., Rebecca West Dobson and husband, Craig of Crisfield, Md. and Hertford, NC; sister, Linda Blevins and husband, Harold of Seven Mile Ford, Va.; 3 grandchildren, Phillip Bailey, Matthew Bailey, both of Elkton, Md. and Sugar Grove, Va. and Carley Dobson Brierre and husband, Chip of Norfolk, Va.; 2 great-grandchildren, Noah Bailey and Mackenzie Bailey both of Perryville, Md.; several nieces and nephews; cousin and life-long friend, Wilma Boatwright; special thanks to caregiver, Connie Dempsey. 

The family would also like to thank the nursing staff at Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 15, 2022 from 12 until 1 p.m. at Elizabeth United Methodist Church, 574 Highlander Road, Sugar Grove, Va. 24375. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor John Roe & Pastor John Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Pugh Cemetery, Teas Road, Sugar Grove, Va. 24375.
