Teresa McNew Surber age 68, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025 at her home.

Teresa Surber was born and raised on Smokey Row in Saltville, a 1975 graduate of R.B. Worthy High School; she spent her entire adult life with her family in Chilhowie. Teresa held many different jobs and titles but was most well known for her time as Administrative Assistant at Chilhowie Elementary School and as a substitute teacher for various Smyth County Schools. With two sons serving in the US Air Force, Teresa often traveled the country to visit her sons and their families over the course of their 20+ years of military service in Washington D.C., New Mexico, and many other places. Additionally, Teresa was well known for her devotion to her faith as a longtime member of Chilhowie Christian Church, New Horizons Christian Church, and, as a result of her extensive nationwide travels, was an honorary member of Grace Community Church in Universal City, Texas, a suburb of San Antonio. Teresa's tenacity and hard work made her an inspiration to others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Myrtle Routh McNew; sisters, Jean, Wanda and Dolly; brothers, Jerry and Bo.

Teresa is survived by her husband of 48 years, Richard Surber; sons, U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Retired Wesley Surber and U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Retired Travis Lee Surber (Emily Robota); sisters, Debbie Poston (Bobby) and Retta Whitehead (Gilbert); brothers, Ronnie McNew (Carmelle) and Ricky McNew (Denise); 4 grandchildren, Ava Surber, Alyssa Surber, Luna Surber and Lily Surber; several nieces and nephews and their families; special friend, Nelly Harmon.

In keeping with Teresa’s wishes, there will be no service.
