MARION, VIRGINIA: WALTER JACKSON BOONE, age 95, died Thursday, September 27, 2007 in Salemtowne Retirement Center in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Marion, Virginia, where he also served on the Administrative Board. Mr. Boone went to work for the Marion Police Force in 1941, and on June 18, 1954, was made Chief of Police. While serving as Chief of Police, one of his greatest accomplishments was being able to get the Police Department on the Virginia Retirement System. He served as Chief of Police until he retired in July 1975. After retirement, he served on the Town Council. In May 2006, he moved to Salemtowne Retirement Center, residing there until his death. His pride and joy in life was his family. He was preceded in death by his wives, Goldie Bourne Boone and Dorothy Carrico Boone; one brother; and two sisters. Mr. Boone is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Jim Smith of Centreville, Virginia; one son and daughter-in-law, James Preston and Phyllis Boone of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; one step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Sandra and Don Cress of Marion, Virginia; one brother, Hiram Vance Boone of Richmond, Virginia; five grandchildren, Andrea Leigh Boone, Jennifer Lynn Boone, J. Matthew Smith and wife, Penn, Amy Elizabeth Roesner and husband, Gary, and Julie Ann Fiorino and husband Anthony; four great-grandchildren with one on the way; two step-grandchildren, Robin Buchanan and husband, Jimmy, and Kim Poston and husband, Ron; four step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, September 30, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Marion, Virginia with the Rev. Jeff Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Virginia. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First United Methodist Church, 115 S. Church St., Marion, Virginia 24354, or to Salemtowne Retirement Center, 1000 Salemtowne Dr., Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27106.
