William Williams "Bill" Harris, age 81, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn.
Bill was born November 8, 1937 to the late Toby Carl and Lena Farmer Harris. He was a member of the U.S. Navy in the mid 50's and was stationed on the USS Macon (CA-132). He was retired from the United Brotherhood – Carpenters of Washington D.C. and the Smyth County Public School System. Bill was baptized as a young man, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Firestone Harris; son, Johnny Blevins; and several brothers and sisters.
Bill is survived by his sons, Fred Blevins of Marion, Va., Rodney Surber, Sr. and significant other, Trish Daughtery of Atkins, Va., Billy Harris and wife, Shirley, Justin Wayne Harris all of Marion, Va., Rodney Surber, Jr. and wife Kayla Surber of Sugar Grove, Va.; brother, Ed Harris of Mouth of Wilson, Va.; sisters, Jeanie Riley of Lebanon, Va., Minnie Ellamae Tuggle and husband, James, and Jean Crigger and significant other, Charles all of Marion, Va.; special nieces, Pam Tuggle, L.C. Tuggle and Charlotte Walters; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and in-laws; and special friend Helen Sprouse.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 22, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Reverend Herman Cress officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park, Rural Retreat, Va. with Military Honors conducted by the U.S. Naval Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 12 noon until the time of service at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
